Specialized Knowledge

Why industry-specific accounting matters.

Generalist firms apply the same chart of accounts, the same KPIs, and the same reports to every client. That works for the easy 60% of the work. It fails on the hardest 40%, which is the part that costs you money.

Our teams specialize. A construction client gets accountants who understand AIA progress billing and retainage. An e-commerce client gets accountants who know Amazon's settlement reports cold. A SaaS client gets revenue recognition that an audit firm will accept.

The specialization shows up in three places: faster closes (less time figuring out what the data means), better tax outcomes (industry-specific credits are not missed), and better operating advice (because we have seen the lever pulled before).

Our Practice Boundaries

Industries we respectfully decline.

Every reputable firm draws a line around the work it accepts. Ours reflects regulatory complexity, banking and insurance constraints, federal and state law conflicts, and our standards for the engagements we want our team focused on.

Adult Industry

Adult entertainment, performers, content platforms, and related operations. Banking and payment-processing exposure puts these outside our practice.

Bars & Alcohol Distributors

Standalone bars, nightclubs, liquor stores, and alcohol wholesalers / distributors. State licensing complexity and dram-shop exposure conflict with our engagement model. Restaurants with incidental beverage service may still qualify.

Gambling & Gaming

Casinos, sportsbooks, online gaming platforms, bookmakers, and related operations. Federal and multi-state regulatory complexity falls outside our practice focus.

Cannabis & Dispensaries

Cannabis dispensaries, growers, processors, and any plant-touching operations. The federal-state law conflict and IRC 280E treatment require specialized practice we do not maintain.

Tobacco, Vape & CBD Retail

Tobacco retailers, vape shops, hookah lounges, and CBD-focused retail. Excise tax complexity and banking restrictions place these outside our scope.

Firearms & Ammunition

Firearms manufacturers, importers, FFL dealers, and ammunition wholesalers. ATF compliance and banking constraints require specialized practice expertise.

Payday & Predatory Lending

Payday loan operators, title lenders, and other high-rate consumer lending models. Regulatory exposure and ethical standards inform this practice boundary.

Cryptocurrency Exchanges & MLM

Centralized crypto exchanges, custodial wallet operators, and multi-level marketing organizations. We work with operating businesses that hold or accept crypto, but not exchanges or MLM models themselves.

If your business falls in one of these categories, we will not be the right fit, but we are glad to point you toward specialized firms that handle the work properly. Email info@troyaccounting.net and we will share referrals.

This list may be updated periodically. Borderline cases are evaluated individually during discovery.
